Calisthenics with

Gina scarangella

Tell the readers a little bit about yourself.

Hey! My name is Gina Scarangella. I grew up in the small town of Ocean View, DE. I began doing gymnastics at the age of six and competed until the age of sixteen. While in high school, I participated in competitive cheerleading and later went on to cheer at La Salle University. After graduating college and obtaining my bachelor’s degree in nursing, I became an NFL cheerleader for the Baltimore Ravens. I currently spend most of my time working as a nurse while still finding time to train for a new sport called calisthenics.

What exactly is calisthenics?

Calisthenics is a sport practiced on bars as well as the ground.  While this may sound similar to gymnastics, calisthenics differs in many ways. The bars used in calisthenics are not the typical wood coated fiber glass bars used by gymnasts, but metal bars you may find in any outdoor park. Competitions do not use a ten point scale; instead, judges look for creativity and static strength. Lastly, the best part about this sport is there are no gym fees. It is free!

How did you get started in calisthenics?

I was first introduced to this sport by a good friend of mine. I had gone to a gym to take a class when I saw him jump on the bars. He started to do bar skills I had never seen before and I instantly thought, “I want to try that!” I started by learning a few basics and continued from there.

What’s the craziest move you’ve ever done on bars?

The craziest move I have ever done on bars is called a palm spin. It is a move where your entire body goes around the top of the bar while holding on with one arm. I actually learned this move on accident while practicing another skill!

Is there a particular move you’re working on mastering now?

I would love to be able to land a 540. This skill requires you to swing under the bar, let go, spin one and a half times and re- catch the bar. I have tried and failed but I am determined!

In your opinion, what is the best part of calisthenics?

The best part about calisthenics is the amount of support each athlete gives each other. I have friends from all over the world who share a love for this sport. If there is ever a time I need tips on mastering something I am working on, I know I can reach out to my calisthenics family.

What muscle groups/parts of the body are worked during calisthenics?

Calisthenics works all muscle groups, but mainly targets upper body and core strength.

If someone is interested in participating in this form of exercise, how would you recommend they get started?

If you are interested in calisthenics it is very easy to get started. As I mentioned before, joining is free because most outdoor parks are equipped with bars. Calisthenics incorporates body weight exercises with freestyle skills, so really anywhere you have space to move around is a good place to start!

Why is exercise and staying active important to you?

Staying active is so important not only because of all of the health benefits it provides, but also because of the feeling I get knowing I’m pushing myself to be the best I can be. I am generally happier and have more energy when I exercise regularly.
